English Malayalam

The Western Ghats is the home for about 50 million people belonging to the Six States of the Country. It is the source of water for the entire Peninsular India, and also influences the monsoons. The life supporting and biodiversity rich ecosystems of Western Ghats are threatened today due to habitat pressures.” Government of India setup an ecology expert panel and then a working group to come up with recommendations to protect the Western Ghats ecosystem. The recommendations report intended to be “ a starting point in a long and what could be an eventful odyssey to understand the man-environmental relations through the eyes of Western Ghats which in the view of its Creator can be a gift or a curse depending on how we judge and act..” was given a go-ahead by GOI but has met with widespread protests across the state of Kerala.

Onam Festival 2013 starting on 07 SEP 2013

Onam ഓണം is a Hindu festival celebrated by the people of Kerala, India. 2013 Onam Festival starts from 07/09/13 Atham day and this year Thiruvonam comes on 16/09/13 after 9 days instead of 10 days. This year Onam festival will be celebrated on Monday, September 16, 2013 Onam falls during the Malayalam month of Chingam (Aug - Sep) and marks the homecoming of the mythical King Mahabali who Malayalees consider as their King. Onam is reminiscent of Kerala's agrarian past, as it is considered to be a harvest festival. Also, it is one of the very few festivals that is celebrated with most number of cultural elements such as Vallam Kali, Pulikkali, Pookkalam, Onappottan, Thumbi Thullal, Onavillu, Kazhchakkula, Athachamayam etc.  It is also the National Festival of Kerala with State holidays on 4 days starting from Onam Eve (Uthradom) to the fourth Onam Day. It is also a secular festival, celebrated by people of all religions and castes with the same zeal.

The historic events that led to this day are discussed in this part. It is said that once a famous king named as the Mahabli used to rule on the earth. He was true follower of lord Vishnu and was a good king too. Being so good in nature, people of his kingdom were very happy with him and he was too popular on the earth. The gaining popularity of him was a subject of concern for god Indra. Also one shortcoming that King Mahabli had was he was too egoistic. All the god went to the Lord Vishnu to find out the way in order to curb the popularity of the Mahabli because world cannot have two Indra and if it does, then it will create an imbalance in the world. So Vishnu changed into Vaman, a dwarf size person. Then he visited King Mahabli and asked him for land that he could cover by his feet in three walks. Seeing that a small dwarf won’t cover an appreciable land, king ordered to give the land. But then Lord Vishnu grew his size to indispensable amount and one foot itself could cover the distance between heaven and Earth and back forth. Mahabali seeing that he could not be able to hold back his promise offered his head to lord Vishnu. Then Lord Vishnu relieved him out of his life.

The 10 day festival starts off with Aathachamayam (The Royal Parade on Aatham Day) in Thripunithara (a suburb of Kochi City). The Parade is extremely colour and depicts all the elements of Kerala culture with more than 50 floats and 100 tableaux. The main center of festival is at Thrikakkara temple within Kochi City, believed to be the ancient capital of King Mahabali. The Temple festival also marks the start of Onam. The ten days of Onam are celebrated with great fanfare, by Malayalees. Of all these days, most important ones are the first day, Atham and the last or tenth day, Thiru Onam.

Onam is indeed a very special event and state wise festival celebrated with great joy, energy and enthusiasm. Since during this time the harvest new crops take place, people tend to make new dishes out of the new crop. On the other, this new harvest is also given to the god as their offerings. Since this festival last for around 10 days continuous, all these 10 days are considered auspicious and celebrated with great joy and happiness. Decorating and making different with the help of the flowers is a regular event these days. Rangoli is also another major event done and in it people make beautiful figures with the help of the colors in the ground.

Vishu Greetings Messages Wishes SMS Wallpaper

Vishu is a Hindu festival celebrated in the Indian state of Kerala. Vishu marks the beginning of Malayalam New Year, the beginning of hope and new life. It is also celebrated in the Tulunadu Region ie. Mangalore &  Udupi districts.  Vishu is  usually coming in the second week of April in the Gregorian calendar. It marks the new year in accordance with Kolla Varsham the Malayalam calendar.

In Kerala, the start of the Zodiac New Year when the sun enters into Sidereal Aries, Ashwini nakshatra is celebrated as Vishu. It is said that what one sees when one first opens one's eyes on Vishu morning is an indication of what one can expect in the year to come. Thus on Vishu, effort is made to assure one opens one's eyes before an auspicious image the Vishukkani.

While the festival is called "Vishu" only in Kerala, across India festivals sharing the same spirit such as Ugadhi in Andhra Pradesh and in Karnataka, Gudi Padwa in Maharashtra, Bihu in Assam and Baisakhi in Punjab are celebrated around the same time of year.

The most important event in Vishu is the Vishukkani. The Malayalam word kani literally means "that which is seen first," so "Vishukkani" means "that which is seen first on Vishu after waking up". The Vishukkani consists of a ritual arrangement of auspicious articles like raw rice, fresh lemon, golden cucumber, betel leaves, arecanut, metal mirror, yellow flowers konna (Cassia fistula), and a holy text and coins, in a bell metal vessel called uruli in the puja room of the house. A lighted bell metal lamp called nilavilakku is also placed alongside. This is arranged the night before Vishu. On Vishu, the custom is to wake up at dawn and go to the puja room with eyes closed so that the Vishukkani is the first sight in the new season. Reading verses from the Hindu Holy book Ramayanam after seeing the "Vishukkani" is considered auspicious.

Vishukani is arranged in the family puja room the night before by the mother in the family, the Vishukkani is a panorama of auspicious items, including images of Lord Vishnu, flowers, fruits and vegetables, clothes and gold coins.

Lord Vishnu, the preserver of creation, is the aspect of the Paramatman that is focused upon during Vishu. In jyotish, Indian astrology, Vishnu is seen as the head of Kaala Purusha, the God of Time. As Vishu marks the first day of the Zodiac New Year, it is an appropriate time to offer oblations to Lord Vishnu.

"Vishu" is celebrated with much fanfare and vigour in all parts of Kerala. Setting off firecrackers is part of the celebration, especially for children. People wear new clothes (Puthukodi) for the occasion and elders of the family give money, called Vishukkaineetam, to children, servants and tenants.

Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple Thiruvanathapuram Treasures found are reportedly worth about Rs.100,000 crores

Sri Padmanabhaswamy temple (Malayalam: ശ്രീ പദ്മനാഭസ്വാമി ക്ഷേത്രം) is one of the most famous Hindu temple dedicated to Vishnu located in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerla, India. The shrine is currently run by a trust headed by the erstwhile royal family of Travancore. Recently Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple Thiruvanathapuram  threw up a treasure trove about Rs. 100,000 Crore treasure (Nidhi in Malayalam) which included antique gold ornaments, diamonds and other precious stones, golden crown, golden bow, golden vessels, and other precious stones were found in the secret chambers (Nilavara in temple) of Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. The seven member panel appointed by the Supreme Court of India who were drawing up a list of assets of the ancient Lord Vishnu Temple were mesmerized by the sight of the huge treasure grove in front of them. Source said that the original value of the treasure found in the Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple Trivandrum will be much more than Rs 100,000 Crore when calculating the price including the antiquity of the treasure found.

The list of articles found are endless which includes one lakh gold coins stored in 20 big sacks, rare diamonds and stones including 'indraneelam', more than 1200 'Sarappoli' gold chains, gold crowns, golden coins, 'Kashu' necklaces, golden plates, diamonds (includes Belgium diamonds), precious stones like emeralds, rubies, etc.

This temple is administered by descendents of Trivancore Samasthaanam The Kerala budget is said to be only Rs.35000 crore. A temple in Kerala could be richer than this and now it is the one of the temple having such treasures.

VISHU : Vish Greetings - Happy Vishu - Malayalees New Year

VISHU: Vish Greetings - Happy Vishu - Malayalees New Year

Vishu (Malayalam:വിഷു) is a new year festival celebrated in the state of Kerala, India. Vishu generally falls on April 14 of the Gregorian calendar. This occasion signifies the Sun's transit to the zodiac - Mesha Raasi (first zodiac sign) as per Indian astrological calculations and astronomically represents the vernal equinox. "Vishu" in Sanskrit means "equal". Therefore Vishu is more probably denoting one of the equinox days. Although Vishu (first of Medam) is the astrological new year day of Kerala, the official Malayalam new year falls on the first month of Chingam (August - September). However, 1st of Chingam has no significance either astrologically or astronomically. Chingam is the harvest season in Kerala and southern parts of coastal Karnataka.

The festival of Vishu is celebrated with joy and mirth on the first day of Malayalese month of Medam. This corresponds to the month of April-May according to Gregorian calendar. The occasion holds a lot of significance for Hindus as Vishu marks the Astronomical New Year Day. The traditional people of Kerala practice a lot of colorful rituals and customs on Vishu. Most of these traditions are based on a belief that Vishu must be celebrated well as the good things of the first day of the New Year will continue for the rest of the year too.

Vishu is celebrated in the State Kerala on the same day is also celebrated as New year in several other parts of India such as Punjab (Baisakhi), Assam (Bihu), Tulu Nadu region in Karnataka where it is known as Bisu as well as in Tamil Nadu and Ugadi in(Andhra Pradesh).

The most important event in Vishu is the Vishukani, which literally "the first to be seen on the VIshu day." The Vishukkani consist of a ritual arrangement of auspicious articles like raw rice, fresh linen, golden cucumber, betel leaves, arecanut, metal mirror, the yellow flowers konna, jackfruit and a holy text and coins in a bell metal vessel called uruli in the puja room of the House. A lighted bell metal lamp called nilavilakku is also placed alongside. The arrangemnt is completed the previous night. On the day of VIshu, the custome is to wake up at dawn and go to the puja room with the eyes closed so that the Vishukkani is the first sight of the new season. Since the occasion marks the beginning of Malayalam New Year, it is also considered asuspicious to read verses from Hindu Holy book Ramayanam after seeing the Vishukkani.
