Chingam 1 (Chinga Masam) is the New Year Day of Malayalam Traditional Calender. Hindus of Kerala are using Malayalam Calender for there religious, cultural and cultivation activities. The Malayalam New Year Chingam 1st is on August 17, Tuesday and is the beginning of Chinga Masam. As per Malayalam Calender the Kolla Varsham begins on August 17 2011. The first day of Chingam month is welcomed by people of Kerala with special poojas and prayers. Hindus in large numbers visit their near by temples and in some part of the Kerala parents were give Kai Neettam to their children.
The official New Year in Kerala (Kolla Varsham) is Chingam 1, the first day in Chinga masam. Karkidaka Masam or Ramayana Masam marks the end of Malayalam Year or Kolla Varsham. But Vishu the first day in Medam month is the astrological or zodiac New Year of Malayalam.

The most popular festival of Malayalees is Onam which is observed Chinga Masam. The 10 days Onam festival begins on the Atham Nakshatram in the Chingam month an the main Onam festival is celebrated on the Thiruonam Nakshatram day of Chinga Masam.

Chingam is the first month of the Malayalam calendar. In the Hindu religion, Dhanu, which is generally referred to as Dhanu Yatra, is a festival holiday relating to Lord Krishnas visit to Mathura. Karkidakam is the last month of the Malayalam calendar. The Malayalam era called KollaVarsham was established in 825 CE (Christian Era).
Some historians attribute the founding of this era to King Udaya Marthanda Varma, King of Venad. In this panchanga, year will start from Chingam, the first Malayalam month (in English calendar this will be August or September). This panchangam is influenced by the Persian panchanga system. India's officially accepted pancangam is SAKAVARSHAM which is started in A.D.78
