2020 New Year Wishes, Facebook messages, Instagram images, Twitter quotes, status update and whatsapp SMS

New Year’s Day marks the start of a new year according to the Gregorian calendar. It is a relatively modern practice. Although Romans began marking the start of their civil year on January 1 in their calendar (prior to the Gregorian calendar), the traditional springtime opening of the growing season and time for major military campaigns still held on as the popular New Year celebration.

Pope Gregory XIII introduced the Gregorian calendar in 1582. It was adopted immediately in some areas of Europe but it was not used in various countries until even centuries later. For example, the United Kingdom and the United States started observing the Gregorian calendar in 1752, in which 11 days were dropped.  It is important to note that not all cultures follow the Gregorian calendar in observing New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. For example the New Year in the Hindu, Chinese, Coptic, Jewish, Islamic calendars differ to that of the Gregorian calendar.

While the biggest annual event of the year is around, you must be planning to celebrate and party with your family and friends. Begin this new year by sharing your love and care with your family and friends. One of the best ways to make your loved ones feel special is by sending them unique wishes and messages for the year 2020.

New Year's Day, also simply called New Year or New Year's, is observed on January 1, the first day of the year on the modern Gregorian calendar as well as the Julian calendar.

In countries like the US, Australia, Malaysia and other European and Western cultures, people congregate at a place to watch fireworks as the New Year's Day descends.

In many parts of the world, music concerts are arranged to celebrate the going of the old year and the beginning of the New Year. In countries like the UK and Netherlands, people often run into water, also known as Polar Bear Plunges, to celebrate New Year's Day. Certain parts of the world have specific traditions associated with the day. For example, in Scotland, the street party on this day is very famous. In Switzerland, there is the tradition of organizing the finals of Spengler Cup Ice Hockey Tournament on New Year's Day.

The eve of the day sees people reveling in music, enjoying liquor and food and dancing till the wee hours of the morning. Radio shows and TV shows are organized specifically to remember the year gone by and to beckon the New Year.

What Do People Do?

New Year’s Day celebrations vary widely across different cultures. Some children receive gifts on New Year’s Day in some countries. This is a popular holiday in Japan, where everyone celebrates his or her birthday. In Scotland the holiday is known as Hogmanay, which is characterized by the custom of visiting friends and relatives after midnight on New Year’s Eve.

Many people who were up on New Year’s Eve to welcome the New Year and have a day off work on New Year’s Day have the chance to sleep in and spend the remainder of the day either attending church services, visiting friends or relatives, going to the movies, staying in, or watching or playing sport. Feasting on traditional New Year’s food is also a widespread practice but dishes vary across cultures.

Many people mark New Year’s Day as the first day to start a New Year’s resolution for the year. New Year’s Day parades are held in some places and some of these parades are televised. The start of New Year’s Day is usually marked by fireworks and music as the clock strikes midnight between New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.

St Abb's Head Lighthouse in Berwickshire, Scotland - A nature reserve star attraction and tourist destination

St Abb's Head Lighthouse in Berwickshire, Scotland Standing sentinel on a windswept clifftop since 1862 is St Abb's Head Light. It is named after the promontory it is perched on, and its companion foghorn (said to be Scotland's first, but silenced in 1987) sits further toward the bluff's tip.

The buildings are closed to the public, but visitors can get a good view from well-maintained walkways. While there, folks are also treated to spectacular views of the surrounding countryside, including the charming village of St Abb's itself.

Surrounding the lighthouse is a nature reserve whose star attraction is a 60,000-strong colony of seabirds, with kittiwakes and guillemots chief among them.

St Abb's Head Lighthouse stands on the cliffs at the rocky promontory of St Abb's Head, near the village of St Abbs in Berwickshire. A signal station was established on the cliffs before 1820 and the facilities were shared by Trinity House and Her Majesty's Coastguard. The Northern Lighthouse Board recommended the building of a lighthouse at St Abb's Head after the sinking of the "Martello" on Carr Rock in 1857.

The lighthouse was designed and built by the brothers David Stevenson and Thomas Stevenson and assisted navigation before and after sight of the Bell Rock and Isle of May lights disappeared from view.

The light began service on 24 February 1862 and initially used oil to generate its light, it was converted to incandescent power in 1906 and to electricity in 1966 and finally automated in 1993. Before automation the lighthouse was staffed by three full-time keepers whose duties included keeping detailed weather records.

The lighthouse has two km of single track tarmaced road leading to it from the main road near St Abbs village, however it is suggested by the National Trust for Scotland that it is only used by disabled visitors and there is limited parking.

Visitors can walk to the Head where the lighthouse's buildings, though still in good repair, are not open to the public. A foghorn was established at the Head in 1876, being the first audible fog signal in Scotland.

The original foghorn was driven by hot air engines before being replaced by oil driven ones in 1911 and then by diesel engines in December 1955. The fog signal was discontinued in 1987 although the horn is still in place and can be reached at the edge of the cliffs by a railed path from the lighthouse.

Karthika Deepam, Karthikai Vilakkidu or Thrikarthika is a festival of lights that is observed by Hindus of Tamil Nadu, Sri Lanka and Kerala. It falls in the month of Kārttikai (mid-November to mid-December) as per Tamil calendar. This occurs on the day when the moon is in conjunction with the constellation Karthigai (Pleiades) and pournami. This constellation appears as a group of six stars in the firmament in the shape of a pendant from the ear. In Kerala, this festival is known as Thrikkarthika, celebrate to welcome Goddess Shakti. In the rest of India, a related festival called Kartik Purnima is celebrated in a different date. It is celebrated in the name of 'Lakshabba' in the Nilgiris district of Tamil Nadu.

Many legends and lyrical poetry have grown around this star. The six stars are considered in Indian mythology as the six celestial nymphs who reared the six babies in the Saravana tank which later were joined together to form the six faced Muruga. They are Dula, Nitatni, Abhrayanti, Varshayanti, Meghayanti and Chipunika. He is therefore called Karthikeya, the incarnation of Lord Shiva as his second son after Lord Ganesha. It is believed that Lord Shiva created Muruga from his 3rd eye note  of six primary faces (Tatpurusam, Aghoram, Sadyojatam,Vamadevam, Eesanam,Adhomukam). It is believed that the six forms made into six children and each of them brought up by the six Karthigai nymphs and later merged into one by his mother Parvati. While merging he also formed into a six faced (Arumugam and twelve handed god. The Lord Muruga is also portrayed with his six plays and worshiped with six names. As the six nymphs helped in growing the child, Lord shiva blessed immortality to the six nymphs as ever living stars on the sky. Any worship performed to this six stars is equal to worshiping Lord Muruga himself. They are worshiped by lighting up rows of oil lamps (Deepam) in the evening of the festival day around the houses and streets. Karthikai Deepam is also known as Kartikeya, or Muruga's birthday.

Trollstigen road in Møre og Romsdal, Norway - a tourist destination

Trollstigen road in Møre og Romsdal, Norway

It is probably not surprising that this serpentine road's name translates to 'Troll's Path.' Seems fitting for a motorway that looks more like something out of a fairytale or ancient myth. But this route snaking across the mountainous landscape of Western Norway is a concrete reality:

Trollstigen is one of the country's top tourist attractions. Because it traverses such a high elevation and receives a great deal of seasonal snowfall, the potentially perilous road is closed between October and May.

But during the rest of the year here in gloriously scenic Møre og Romsdal county, more than 150,000 cars will typically travel the twisting road.

Trollstigen was opened on 31 July 1936, by King Haakon VII after eight years of construction. A major tourist facility including a restaurant was completed in 2012. Several viewing platforms have been constructed and older constructions improved upon. Trollstigen (along with County Road 63) was officially opened as a national tourist route by the Minister of Transport and Communications on 16 June 2012.

Trollstigen itself (and the alpine summits to the west) lies within the Trollstigen landscape protection area, while the alpine area east of Trollstigen, including the Trolltindene range, is part of Reinheimen National Park. In the summer of 2005, the road was repaired and about 16 million kr was spent on protection against rockfall, making the road safer to drive on.

Wayag Islands in the Raja Ampat Islands, Indonesia

The Wayags are part of the larger Raja Ampat Islands off the coast of Indonesia’s West Papua Province. These small, uninhabited islands are popular with divers and snorkellers eager to explore the vast and diverse reef system surrounding them.

The Wayags are within the Coral Triangle, which covers only 1.6 percent of Earth’s oceanic regions, but contains 76 percent of every known coral species on the planet. Some scientists say the diversity of the ecosystem in the triangle is comparable to that of the Amazon rainforest. The region is even sometimes referred to as 'The Amazon of the seas.' Map It

Raja Ampat Islands

Located off the northwest tip of Bird's Head Peninsula on the island of New Guinea, in Indonesia's West Papua province, Raja Ampat, or the Four Kings, is an archipelago comprising over 1,500 small islands, cays, and shoals surrounding the four main islands of Misool, Salawati, Batanta, and Waigeo, and the smaller island of Kofiau. The Raja Ampat archipelago straddles the Equator and forms part of Coral Triangle which contains the richest marine biodiversity on earth.

The Coral Triangle is a roughly triangular area of the tropical marine waters of Indonesia, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Solomon Islands and Timor-Leste that contain at least 500 species of reef-building corals in each ecoregion. This region encompasses portions of two biogeographic regions: the Indonesian-Philippines Region, and the Far Southwestern Pacific Region.

The Coral Triangle is recognized as the global centre of marine biodiversity and a global priority for conservation. It is also called the "Amazon of the seas" and covers 5.7 million square kilometres of ocean waters. Its biological resources sustain the lives of over 120 million people. According to the Coral Triangle Knowledge Network, about $3 billion in fisheries exports and another $3 billion in coastal tourism revenues are derived as annual foreign exchange income in the region.
