Vijayadashami 2026: Celebrating the Triumph of Wisdom and Kerala's Sacred Tradition of Vidyarambham

Observed on October 21, 2026, Vijayadashami marks the auspicious culmination of the nine-day Navaratri festival. Across India, the day symbolizes the victory of righteousness over evil, commemorating Goddess Durga's triumph over the demon Mahishasura after nine days and nights of battle. In Kerala, however, this victory is celebrated primarily as the triumph of knowledge over ignorance through Poojayeduppu and Vidyarambham.

​The Sacred Rituals of Poojayeduppu and Vidyarambham

​Following the placement of books and tools of trade for worship on Durgashtami (Poojaveppu) and their veneration on Mahanavami, devotees respectfully reclaim them on Vijayadashami morning (Poojayeduppu). This practice reinforces the cultural belief that one's profession, study, and instruments of livelihood are sacred manifestations of the divine.

​The centerpiece of Kerala's Vijayadashami is Vidyarambham (Ezhuthiniruthu), where toddlers are formally initiated into the world of letters. Elders, scholars, or priests write the sacred mantra "Harih Sri Ganapataye Namah" on the child's tongue using a gold ring and guide the child's index finger to trace the letters in a platter of raw rice or sand. Famous centers of learning and worship—including Kollur Mookambika, Panachikkadu Dakshina Mookambika, and Thunchan Parambu in Tirur—resound with hymns to Goddess Saraswathi as thousands of children begin their educational journey.
